Details of US Space Force, 6th military branch unveiled

It's official: The Trump administration says it will create a sixth branch of the us military known as the " Space Force" by 2020.

The Pentagon will also create a Space Development Agency to work on new technologies for space defense, as well as a Space Operations Force that will draw from across the military to provide space expertise in times of crisis and conflict.

After some questions as to whether the Pentagon was dragging its heels on the initiative, US Vice-President Mike Pence has officially announced the establishment of a Space Force, which would be the sixth branch of the US military.

President Donald Trump's campaign Thursday reportedly emailed supporters with potential designs for the Space Force logo, asking them to vote on a pick that will wind up on the president's campaign merchandise.

"The time has come to establish the United States Space Force", he said, repeating Trump's call for Congress to invest an additional $8 billion in USA space security systems over the next five years. It will be the first new armed service since 1947 and the sixth branch of the United States military.

He then revealed that the Department of Defense would release a report later in the day outlining the steps needed to create this new military branch.

The Space Force will be a new department of the U.S. military which Trump has described as "separate but equal". We have the Air Force, we'll have the Space Force.

It would be led by a civilian who would report to the Secretary of Defense.

The White House points to galactic threats from United States adversaries, particularly Russian Federation and China, which could develop weapons to jam, blind or destroy satellites that are crucial to communications systems.

Pence said Russia, China, North Korea and Iran for years "have pursued weapons to jam, blind and disable our navigation and communication satellites via electronic attacks from the ground".

After voting for a logo, users are asked to enter their information and to donate to the Trump-Pence re-election campaign.

More recently, Mattis expressed support for establishing a new combatant command for space.

Senator Bernie Sanders added that maybe the government should guarantee healthcare 'before we start spending billions to militarize outer space'.

The idea of a Space Force has proven popular among Trump's loyal base. It is a process we're in.

A better idea would be elevating an organization within the Air Force to deal with space, Thompson said. He also says that the current system, with the Air Force in charge of military space operations, is not ideal. We don't need Space Force.

"We in the House have been warning for years about the threats to our space assets and the unacceptably slow pace to develop more capable space systems", he tweeted. Funding would have to be appropriated by Congress, something that the defense secretary, Jim Mattis, opposed when it was previously proposed, but he now says he supports the new force.
