NBA Free Agent Rumors: Isaiah Thomas Agrees To Contract With Nuggets

After a few days of inaction, the National Basketball Association free agent market is suddenly back in full swing.

The impending reunion between Denver Nuggets head coach Mike Malone and point guard Isaiah Thomas was one that stemmed from a honest relationship early in their careers.

Isaiah Thomas has finally found a new home. Thomas has been dealing with the lingering effects from right hip surgery he underwent in 2017, as well as a torn labrum.

But this move could be right for Thomas and with the bad luck he's had over the previous year, he deserves to get his career back on track in Denver and return to a high level. The year before, Thomas led the Celtics to the Eastern Conference Finals, averaging 28.9 points and 5.9 assists per game on 46% shooting, 37% from three. In addition to not meshing with James upon his return to game action, Thomas never appeared to be on the same page as Cavs coach Ty Lue (Thomas at one point questioned the Cavs' coaching techniques), and shot at a career-worst 25.3 percent behind the arc before he was shipped to the Lakers near the trade deadline.

The one-year, minimum deal is a gamble for Thomas, though one he may have been forced to take. But a torn labrum that cost him eight months of rehab, and a trade to the Cleveland Cavaliers last summer, upended his hopes for that kind of a long-term deal.

Thomas will earn $2 million, according to Wojnarowski. There, he started just one game, coming off the bench in his other 16 appearances.

Thomas likely sees this as a potential bridge season for him to prove that he's healthy and still capable of being the player he was for the Boston Celtics two seasons ago.
