Thai cave rescue: Elon Musk reveals child-size submarine

The eight boys who were rescued through Monday had to travel about two and a half miles with oxygen tanks and were accompanied by two professional divers each. He said recent rains had not affected water levels in the cave and conditions were expected to be "as good as they were on Sunday", reported The Guardian.

They are said to be in good health and demanding fried rice in a hospital on Monday, Osottanakorn said.

Just a few kilometres from the lush forest that covers the mountainside of the Tham Luang cave, four boys dressed in their white school uniforms shoot hoops on an outdoor basketball court in Mae Sai. He is still believed to be one of the nine inside the cave.

Experienced cave rescue experts consider an underwater escape a last resort, especially with people untrained in diving, as the boys are.

The four boys guided from the cave Sunday in an urgent and risky operation that involved them diving through the cave's dark, tight and twisting passages were happy and in good health, authorities said.

The president of soccer's governing body, FIFA, has invited the boys to the World Cup final in Moscow on Sunday if they make it out in time.

After rescuing the four boys, the officials paused the operation for at least 10 hours to fill the oxygen tanks that were used.

The entire operation to get all 13 out of the cave could take two to four days, depending on weather and water conditions, Thai army Major General Chalongchai Chaiyakam.

Four of the boys were safely rescued on Sunday after rescuers carried out a risky operation, amid fears the waters will rise again to a unsafe level.

According to Chiang Rai provincial acting Gov. Narongsak Osatanakorn, the healthiest of the boys were removed first.

Four more boys from the "Wild Boar" soccer team were rescued by a team of 18 divers, with the first boy emerging from the cave about 4.30pm local time (7.30) pm AEST).

A relative of one member of the soccer team said that the boys' families had agreed to remain at the cave until all of the boys and the coach are brought out.

Thai officials say four boys were brought out of a flooded cave in northern Thailand on Monday.

Elon Musk and a team of SpaceX engineers built a mini submarine to try to help the youth soccer team and coach who were trapped in a Thai cave by rising waters.

Divers have gone in for the second rescue attempt, Thai officials said.

The unidentified boys were carried out of the Tham Luang Nang Non cave on stretchers and into ambulances Monday before being airlifted to the Chiang Rai Pranukroh Hospital.

But with oxygen levels inside dropping to unsafe lows and the prospect of heavy rains flooding the area completely, authorities decided they had to move quickly, and take the group out through the water-filled tunnels.

Pad kra pao, a Thai chicken dish, was said to be the first meal that the four boys asked for.

Rescuers have been navigating a risky and complicated plan to get the children out under the threat of heavy rain and rising water underground.

That sense of accomplishment was also reflected in the message posted Monday night on the Thai Navy SEALS's Facebook page announcing the latest rescues. An international-level rescue mission began soon after, with hundreds of experts and military personnel from various countries arriving at the spot. A major concern of the rescuers is that oxygen levels in their safe space could fall dangerously low.
