Basketball Australia apologizes for FIBA brawl

The International Basketball Federation (Fiba) has opened disciplinary proceedings against both sides.

Australia led 79-48 late in the third quarter when the fight broke out after a nasty shoulder check from Roger Pogoy of the Philippines.

"We are extremely disappointed with what happened and our role in it", the statement continued.

Moore said Australian players, coaches and officials held genuine fears for their physical safety in what he described as a "tinderbox" of tension in the Philippines, where basketball is the most popular sport.

"What we don't accept is the action whereby fans and officials actually get involved in the fray", he said.

From the Philippines, Calvin Abueva, Japeth Aguilar, Andray Blatche, Jayson Castro, Carl Cruz, R.R. Pogoy, Terrence Romeo, Troy Rosario and Matthew Wright were all ejected.

"You can't expect to do that to a team for five times and not expect [them] to retaliate".

The fracas kicked off after a Philippine player appeared to catch an opponent with an elbow and the ensuing clashes saw a total of nine Philippine players and four Australians sent off.

"[Looking at the footage] one of our players, Nathan Sobey, is getting assaulted by a fan".

"We want basketball to be the victor".

"We find that absolutely unacceptable".

As there was no immediate threat to the players the game resumed but in a tame form as Fajardo and Norwood fouled softly until they fouled out, thus forcing the game to end. "The decision (s) will be communicated in the coming days", FIBA said.

Scheduled post-match press conferences for both teams were cancelled in the aftermath of the incident.

Philippines coach Vincent Reyes blamed Australia's Kickert for the brawl, claiming he provoked his side.

The Australian national team issued an apology for its behavior soon after the game.
