American Killed, Nine Injured in Bahamas Boat Explosion

- An excursion boat exploded in the Bahamas on Saturday, leaving one American dead and several injured.

One American woman was killed and seven other people were injured.

Stefanie Schaffer, 22, (left), her teenage sister Brooke (middle), and their mother Stacey (right) were among the injured when a tour boat exploded in the Bahamas.

"We know their expenses will far exceed this", the page reads, "as this becomes a life long struggle for this family". There was 10 passengers and two Bahamians on board at the time.

Schaffer was taken to a Bahamas hospital, where both her legs were amputated.

The captain of that boat, Ron Watson, has been discharged from a hospital in Nassau, the capital of Bahama, after receiving treatment there, CNN reported. Because of Stefanie's serious injuries and the surgery needed because of the Stacey's fractured legs, the family is working to get Stefanie and Stacey back to the United States.

Shanta Knowles, superintendent of police for the Royal Bahamas Police Force, told NBC investigators were still "trying to determine what went wrong".

Exumas and Ragged Island MP Chester Cooper said in a statement: "This is a sad day for Exuma and a sad day for our American friends".

Stefanie Schaffer's family has since created a GoFundMe page to help cover the costs of the medical procedures for her and her mom.

A video of the incident, filmed from a nearby boat and posted to YouTube, shows the vessel covered in flames with thick black smoke rising.
