Dingell reacts to Supreme Court upholding Trump's Muslim Ban

The American Civil Liberties Union denounced the Supreme Court's decision to uphold President Donald Trump's travel ban on majority-Muslim countries, calling it another shameful chapter in US history.

"The [order] is expressly premised on legitimate purposes: preventing entry of nationals who can not be adequately vetted and inducing other nations to improve their practices", Chief Justice John Roberts wrote in the majority opinion.

Chief Justice Roberts wrote that presidents have frequently used their power to talk to the nation "to espouse the principles of religious freedom and tolerance on which this Nation was founded". It restricts, to varying degrees, the entry of citizens from seven countries: Iran, North Korea, Syria, Libya, Yemen, Somalia and Venezuela.

Chad, a Muslim majority country, was removed from the list in April after improving "its identity-management and information sharing practices", Mr Trump said.

Lower courts had deemed the ban unconstitutional, but the U.S. top court reversed the decision in a 5-4 ruling.

Those figures come from a newly released state department report released, as the country reacts to the Supreme Court ruling to uphold the ban.

Trump also linked the travel ban with his hard-line stance on southern border crossings, making clear that immigration would be a central campaign issue as he stumps for Republicans in the midterms.

Trump himself seemed surprised by the ruling, tweeting: 'SUPREME COURT UPHOLDS TRUMP TRAVEL BAN.

"The Supreme Court voted in favor of the president's travel ban 5-4, or as Trump calls that, unanimous", Hollywood reporter quoted the Jimmy Fallon as saying. The initial order, signed soon after he took office in January a year ago, led to days of nationwide protests and chaos at airports across the country.

The latest version of the ban saw the inclusion of Venezuela and North Korea, a move activists alleged, was meant to cover up the bias of the ban against Muslims.

Senator Bob Menendez, the top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said, "Despite today's ruling, turning away those fleeing horrific violence and persecution or to discriminate against people based on nationality and religion continues to be as un-American as ever".

President Trump is having lunch with members of Congress at the White House on Tuesday.

In her dissent, Justice Sonia Sotomayor compared the ruling to a 1944 court decision, Korematsu v.

Trump has signed three versions of executive orders on immigration restrictions targeting several Muslim-majority countries.

The Court ruled that the law violated the free speech rights of Christian facilities.

Mubarak with CAIR told Spectrum News many Muslims feel hopeless about the ban and are anxious more countries could be added.
