CITY OF NORTHLAKE: Chicago bracing for dangerous heat wave

CITY OF NORTHLAKE: Chicago bracing for dangerous heat wave

There were few power outages in the city as of Saturday morning, but power issues care more likely during heat waves.

A heat advisory is now in effect until 6 a.m. Sunday and an excessive heat warning is in effect from 6 a.m. Sunday until 6 a.m. Monday. That means heat index values will be 107-112 in the afternoon. Heat index levels will rise into the 100s, with localized heat index levels from Albany, New York, to Hartford, Connecticut, over 105 degrees.

So far, the good news is local emergency rooms are not reporting an uptick in the treatment of heat-related injuries.

Slightly cooler conditions are expected on Monday as a backdoor cold front approaches from the northeast.

The temperature will hit the low 70s at the coast and mid-80s inland on the Fourth of July.

Drink plenty of water, stay in the air-conditioning and out of the sun.

Make use of those air conditioners!

Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location, and help for them should be sought by calling 911 immediately.

If you must be outdoors, avoid being outside in the middle of the day and keep an eye out for signs of heat exhaustion or stroke.

The NWS posted a reminder Friday that heat kills more people each year than tornadoes, lightning and floods. "High around 90 degrees", he said. Lows won't drop below 70.
