Andres Iniesta confirms Spain retirement

It has been confirmed that legendary midfielder Andres Iniesta has retired from Spanish global duty.

Some debate rages as to whether Spain's suffocating style today resembled the "Tiki-Taka" philosophy that garnered them and Barcelona every major trophy in both club and worldwide football.

The 34-year-old dropped to the bench for the last-16 clash, having started all of Spain's three group games, but was introduced on 67 minutes for his 131st global cap.

The 34-year-old announced he had played his last game for his country following his country's shock penalty-shootout defeat in Moscow, adding: "Sometimes, the end is not as you dreamed it".

However, Iniesta did accept coach Fernando Hierro's decision to leave him out of the starting XI. 'A marvellous spell is over.

'It's bad, it's tough.

The host team won an astonishing upset victory over Spain by prevailing in a penalty shootout.

"In the second half, we were trying to defend".

Sergei Ignashevich scored La Roja's 99th goal in World Cup history with an untidy own goal as he wrestled with Sergio Ramos when attempting to defend a free-kick.

There was another shock in the World Cup as Spain crashed out of the competition against Russian Federation.

"Some players will come, others will go, but we're always proud to represent this national team".

From 1950 to 1978 there was something of a goal drought for Spain at the biggest worldwide tournament with only two coming in 1962 in Chile and four in England's tournament held in 1966.
