Trump gets historic chance to shift Supreme Court to right

The person Trump picks for the seat is nearly certainly going to be more conservative than Kennedy.

A slot on the nine-member bench opened with the announced retirement of Justice Anthony Kennedy, who for years has served as the tie-breaking vote between the bench's liberal and conservative judges. However, he did substantially reaffirm the right to abortion in the two most important cases to follow Roe v. Wade (1973). "I think that's something the American people simply will not tolerate".

The president says in the Oval Office that he will choose Kennedy's successor from a list of 25 names that have been under consideration. All six of these judges are on Trump's list.

Rather, it seems more probable that Trump - who will only need Republican votes to get his nominee confirmed in the Senate - will pick a judge in the mold of Neil Gorsuch, his first Supreme Court pick who has emerged as far-right voice on the court. Also potential replacements: Thomas Hardiman of Pennsylvania, who serves on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit, and Raymond Kethledge of MI, who serves on the 6th Circuit.

Kennedy's retirement announcement Wednesday provided Trump with an opportunity to place a second justice on the all-important court. If so, he or she will provide a fifth vote for the court's conservatives rather than its liberals - and over time reshape the USA legal landscape.

Manchin says he's "pro-life, but I know how that divides our country immediately, divides everyone". It would also have prevented gay people from marrying and ended university admissions programs that take race into account, she said. Sotomayor also described various statements Trump made on the campaign trail.

Trump responded to questions about potentional nominees, including federal judges Brett M Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett, as well as US Senator Mike Lee from Utah. Yet he also wrote the 2010 Citizens United opinion establishing that corporations, unions and other associations can make expenditures to influence elections.

"He said he'd like the job, usually they don't say that", Trump.

The process toward "the majority rules" rules began with the "Borking" of Robert Bork in 1987, when politics entered the confirmation process. He had released a version of the list during the 2016 campaign and seemingly used it to assuage Republican voters uneasy about his conservative bona fides.

"Our Republican colleagues in the Senate should follow the rule they set in 2016: not to consider a Supreme Court justice in an election year", said the NY lawmaker.

THOMAS HARDIMAN of Pennsylvania, US Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit: Hardiman was among those interviewed by Trump previous year to fill the vacancy left by Antonin Scalia's death.

The Judicial Crisis Network, a conservative political campaign organization, has launched a seven-figure ad buy aimed at vulnerable Democrats, said chief counsel and policy director Carrie Severino. But it is a precedent limited on its facts to vacancies occurring because of a sudden death of a justice in a presidential election year.
