Trump to Harley-Davidson: 'We won’t forget, and neither will your customers'

President Trump has time and again pointed out to the iconic American motorcycle brand, as he pursues a protectionist trade policy, but instead Harley-Davidson seems to be facing the heat, following the retaliatory tariff hikes in the European Union and announced even in India. Other companies are coming back where they belong! He went on to say he "fought hard for them and ultimately they will not pay tariffs selling into the E.U".

According to CNBC, Harley-Davidson revealed it was planning to get around the tariffs by shifting some production overseas.

"Our decision to move some of our operations is 100% based on President Trumps tariffs. Hence, they were just using Tariffs/Trade War as an excuse", he said. "We are getting other countries to reduce and eliminate tariffs and trade barriers that have been unfairly used for years against our farmers, workers and companies".

The company noted this would have raised the cost of motorcycles built in the United States and imported into Europe by approximately $2,200 (€1,888) each.

Either way, moving some production overseas looks like it may be in Harley-Davidson's best interest.

"If they move, watch, it will be the beginning of the end - they surrendered, they quit!"

The relationship between Trump and Harley-Davidson has gone from a love affair to a bad breakup in a matter of months. Trump then threatened the company "will be taxed like never before" if they follow through with the move.

Michael Pflughoeft, a spokesman for Harley-Davidson, said that the anti-Trump quote linked to the company's chief executive that was circulating on Twitter in various forms was "absolutely, unequivocally fake and false".

Rising trade tensions and retaliatory tariffs could pose serious risks for Harley-Davidson, rating agency Moody's said.

Steven Mnuchin, the Treasury secretary, also expressed his dismay with Harley-Davidson on Wednesday, saying during remarks at the Treasury Department that Trump has been a big champion of trying to help Harley by reducing tariffs on motorcycles and cutting corporate taxes. "Harley must know that they won't be able to sell back into US without paying a big tax!"

Trump enjoyed the support of a group called "Bikers for Trump" in his 2016 presidential campaign and he invited Harley-Davidson representatives to the White House in February 2017 shortly after he took office, greeting them with the words "Made in America, Harley-Davidson". Trump said these retaliatory tariffs were "completely without justification" under worldwide norms.
