Oppo Find X vs Vivo Nex: the all-screen smartphone showdown

Oppo Find X vs Vivo Nex: the all-screen smartphone showdown

You won't find a notch on this phone.

One of the biggest highlight of the Oppo Find X is its "Stealth 3D camera" which are not just hidden but also integrate the company's face recognition dubbed O-Face recognition system. But the Find X takes that familiar design and builds on it with the introduction of a retractable motorised panel that keeps the front-facing camera off the screen, eliminating the need to interrupt the area with a controversial notch.

Oppo Find X features a 6.4-inch OLED display with the resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels, 19.5:9 aspect ratio. OPPO is calling this display their Panoramic Arc Screen.

Under the hood, it is powered by a Snapdragon 845 chipset, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB of internal storage. Oppo Find X facial recognition uses 15,000 dots to map a face which is further supported by flood illuminator, IR camera, proximity sensor, a dot projector and of course the front-facing camera.

The pod-mounted rear-facing camera setup has two sensors, one a 16-MP unit with an f/2.0 lens and and the other a 20-MP snapper with an f/2.2 lens. The Find X would obviously be the most expensive smartphone that OPPO has ever made, but knowing Chinese phone makers, OPPO should set the phone's price lower than devices like the Galaxy S9. But on the Oppo Find X, the phone's entire top side basically slides out, which appears to me to be the more elegant and aesthetically pleasing solution. Oppo is looking to sell the device internationally for €999.

Operating system The Oppo Find X runs Android 8.1 Oreo operating system topped with company's own layer of customisation - Color OS 5.1, while the Vivo Nex runs on Funtouch OS 4.0 based on Android 8.1 Oreo out-of-the-box.

The Oppo Find X (announced Tuesday) has a screen that stretches from the very top of the phone, wraps around the sides and goes nearly to the very bottom (the phone has a thin bottom bezel, aka a "chin"). Oppo calls this technology - O-Face.

The Find X doesn't have a fingerprint scanner like many of its competitors in market. However, its motorized design means that the Find X misses out on something that we've all taken for granted in today's phones: waterproofing. It has the front and back camera and Oppo has claimed that it has been tested over 300,000 times for its durability.

The Automobili Lamborghini edition of the Find X will also have an updated storage with a massive 512GB of on-board storage. Sadly, the brand hasn't divulged the price of the flagship, but we won't have to wait for long to know that. Powering the smartphone is a 3,730mAh battery under the rear panel. It also carries Huawei-inspired AI-enhanced object and scene detection feature that tweaks camera settings automatically.
