Kane's stoppage-time header earned the Three Lions a tough three points in their Group G opener, a Ferjani Sassi penalty having cancelled out the captain's early strike.

Before this fixture, Kane had not scored in a major tournament, but, after his all-important double, he becomes the first England player to score twice in a World Cup match since Gary Lineker against Cameroon in 1990. Low expectations for this year's overhauled team were dispelled early in Russian Federation when Kane reacted quickly to score after John Stones' header was saved.

England had nearly paid a heavy price for missing a slew of first-half chances when Tunisia's Ferjani Sassi slotted home a softly-awarded penalty 20 minutes before half-time.

Just when it looked like the "Three Lions" were going to extend their disappointing run in World Cup tournaments, Kane stooped at the far post to head home in the 91st minute.

"We are proud of each other", Kane said. "We played really well in the first half and could have got more, we deserved to be ahead".

"I've not seen the penalty, but from my point of view it didn't look like one".

"You go until the last second", Kane said, "and I'm absolutely buzzing".

The Spurs striker admitted there had been some nerves present beforehand in the camp, but was full of praise for the team.

In reality, it doesn't matter how the players performed.

After the opening 10 minutes, England looked static and uninspiring, they don't know where to go.

"No matter what system we play, the important thing is when you are attacking you still have structure in your play".

"It was Kane who won this match for England", Maaloul told reporters after the England captain's 91st-minute victor had left some of his players in tears at the final whistle.

Tunisia coach Nabil Maaloul said he didn't feel them because he was "so focused on the team, on the game".

First Jordan Henderson's lofted first-time pass released Dele Alli and when the ball eventually broke to Jesse Lingard he saw his shot from six yards saved by the outstretched left boot of Mouez Hassen in the Tunisia goal. His header led to Harry Kane's goal but a swing and a miss in the 39 minute was not his best effort on goal.

Kane's confidence will be a boost to England boss Gareth Southgate, who has taken a vibrant but relatively inexperienced squad to Russian Federation. "These are not half chances, these are very, very good chances that we should be putting in the back of the net".
