Gregg Popovich meets with Kawhi Leonard

Gregg Popovich meets with Kawhi Leonard

Leonard had told confidants that he did not want to sit down with Popovich and has been purposely hard for the Spurs to reach recently.

In fact, one report says Gregg Popovich met with Kawhi Leonard on Tuesday, two days before the NBA Draft.

Leonard played in only nine games this season, scoring 16.2 points a night, well below his average of 25.5 in 2016-17. Among the issues, Leonard is angry over what he believes was the Spurs' mishandling of his quad injury, and remains irate with public comments from teammate Tony Parker and Popovich that he felt were not supportive of him, league sources said. Despite the meeting, Leonard has privately said he no longer wants to play with San Antonio, but it's unlikely the team would be motivated to work out a deal with the Lakers, the sources said.

Leonard would prefer to sign with the Los Angeles Lakers over the Clippers, who also have interest in signing him. However, the Spurs are telling teams they are trying all they can to fix things with their star forward though they are doing their due diligence on the trade front.

Various reports over the last few months indicated the sides disagreed about the nature of Leonard's injury, how to treat it and how soon he would be able to return to the floor. He has a player option for the following season which he would decline to become a free agent.

According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski and Ramona Shelburne, Popovich has simply flown to LA to meet with Leonard. He is eligible to sign a five-year, $219 million supermax extension with San Antonio this summer.
