Production version of Porsche Mission E to be called 'Taycan'

We'll re-visit the Mission E's specs shortly, but for now you should know that Porsche's upcoming EV will not, in fact, be called the Mission E when it becomes available for purchase in 2019. The name roughly translates to, "lively, young horse", a reference to the company's logo. The electric sports vehicle is expected to go on sale at the end of 2019. Two permanently excited synchronous motors (PSM) with a system output of over 590 bhp.

Make that gallop. The Taycan's pair of electric motors will output "over 600 hp" and launch the auto to 200 km/h in under 12 seconds.

Porsche has billed the Taycan as a track-capable EV, created to support multiple jump starts in quick succession without power loss due to battery overheating. Series production of the vehicle won't actually begin until early 2019. Range will reportedly be over 500km under the NEDC testing scheme, although we're holding our breath to hear how that range looks under WLTP. Despite the impressive performance, the Taycan will have a range in excess of 500 km (310 miles) in the New European Driving Cycle.

The name of the Porsche Mission E concept's production version has been revealed.

The Taycan has been dubbed the "Tesla-slayer" by some automotive journalists. Over $580 million will be allocated to the production of the Taycan and other vehicles based on it, including a crossover previously known as Mission E Cross Turismo.

Stefan Weckbach, Head of the BEV Model Series at Porsche, recently said that they want to make their first all-electric vehicle feel "like a real Porsche." Still, previous suggestions have indicated a starting price in the region of $80-90k.

Porsche will invest over $7 billion in electric vehicles and related technology by 2022. Today, it has announced that it's doubling that investment. There'll also be an outlay on ramping up production. First up will be new infrastructure to support the Taycan: a dedicated assembly area, electric motor manufacturing, and a new body shop, all in Stuttgart. Production of the Taycan is creating around 1,200 new jobs in Zuffenhausen alone.
