How to get help for someone who might be suicidal

A new United States report shows the nation's suicides had risen by 30 per cent since 1999, and that the crisis was a growing problem.

The CDC says suicide is the country's 10th leading cause of death.

"Unfortunately, our data show that the problem is getting worse", CDC Principal Deputy Director Dr. Anne Schuchat said in a press briefing.

Between 1999 and 2016, the suicide rate in West Virginia increased 37.1%.

Although mental health is often perceived as the cause of suicide, the CDC stressed that suicide has many intersecting factors. Every state but Nevada saw an increase in suicide rates during that time, the CDC reported.

With almost 45,000 suicides across the country in 2016, the report described suicide as a "growing public health problem" and said a variety of factors may contribute to the increase. "There's people out there like us who want to help and this is never your only option".

For those living anywhere else the International Association for Suicide Prevention and Befrienders Worldwide can provide contact details for suicide help.

A frank approach can let the person know "you're not afraid" of the subject and you care enough to ask, she said. While the study did not look at the potential reasons why that might be, Schuchat offered a possible explanation.

Preventing suicide requires help from all sectors of society, the researchers said.

Veterans are also a key part of the demographics; while veterans make up only 8.5% of the population, they are 18% of adult suicides. Montana recorded the highest rate of 29.2 suicides per 100,000, and Washington, D.C., the lowest, at 6.9 suicides per 100,000 people. The suicide growth rate in Florida went up 10.6 percent - among the smallest increases in the nation.

In Pennsylvania, the suicide rate has jumped more than 34 percent.

In 2016, the population group at the highest risk for suicide was 45 to 54, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

NY has the second lowest suicide rates in the country.

Prevention efforts are best done when "people can get help solving the underlying drivers of the problems causing them to feel hopeless and despair", Stuber said.

- Remove any objects that could be used in a suicide attempt.

The CDC urges potential suicides to call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline 1-800-273-8255.
