A quiet advocate for veterans celebrates a major VA reform

On Wednesday, Virginia House of Delegates Speaker Kirk Cox (R-Colonial Heights) was invited to the White House to join President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence for the signing of the VA Mission Act.

Cassidy said in a press release that he is trying to push the VA to open up non-transplant care to more veterans. "Our veterans deserve to know that our nation will support them when they return from the frontlines, and that's what this bill is all about".

"The bill makes much-needed investments in the healthcare of our nation's heroes and includes important reforms to make sure they get the healthcare they need when they need it", he said.

The Government Accountability Office reports veterans had to wait up to 64 days for an appointment with private doctors.

The tension over how to pay for the legislation is part of a larger debate over private care for veterans. The legislation authorizes new health care programs for veterans, but the bill does not reserve federal money to pay for those programs.

While residents in East Tennessee have the Mountain Home Veterans Affairs Hospital in Johnson City and community clinics in places such as Morristown and Knoxville, veterans in other parts of the country have to drive hours to obtain health care services from the VA, Roe said. "Medical decisions should be made between a doctor and their patient, and that is exactly what this bill does". "Our historic law gets rid of the government bureaucracy that has stood between Montana veterans and their health care".

"All during the campaign I'd go out and say, 'Why can't they just go see a doctor instead of standing in line for weeks and weeks and weeks?' Now they can go see a doctor".

"With President Trump, we took a big step in improving care and choice for our veterans".

Recent legislation created to improve Veterans Affairs services has the potential to transform the system, according to Congressman Phil Roe. Previously, comprehensive caregiver assistance and benefits were provided only to veterans injured on or after September 11, 2001, leaving family caregivers and veterans injured during World War II, the Korean, Vietnam and 1990-1991 Gulf War ineligible for this critical support.

The VA Mission Act aims to develop a high-performance integrated care network by establishing a new community care program, improving physician payment processes, developing education resources for veterans seeking care, and setting patient safety guidelines for opioid prescriptions. "I'm proud the House Committee on Veterans Affairs advanced Dr. Dunn's legislation to allow for the greater sharing of information between VA and state-based prescription drug monitoring programs, and I'm grateful for his continued work on this issue". "This should help the (Veterans Affairs) keep up with demand". "But it is not the most cost effective way to take care of our veterans".

The president said he won't treat as mandatory a requirement to consult Congress on the appointment of members to an asset and infrastructure review commission.
