Guatemala's Volcano of Fire erupts again, with 192 people still missing

Volcan de Fuego, which means "Volcano of Fire" in Spanish, is one of several active volcanoes among 34 in the Central American country.

The speed of the eruption took locals by surprise, and could be explained by it producing pyroclastic flows, sudden emissions of gas and rock fragments, rather than lava, said volcanologist David Rothery of Britain's Open University.

Municipal firefighters search for victims in the ash-covered village of San Miguel Los Lotes, in Escuintla Department, about 35 km southwest of Guatemala City, on June 6, 2018.

A dead cow lays in the disaster zone near following the eruption of a volcano in Guatemala, June 5, 2018.

A photo released by Guatemalan authorities shows buildings and trucks covered in white volcanic ash from the Volcán de Fuego (Volcano of Fire), seen erupting in the top-right image.

On Tuesday, authorities said at least 75 people have died in the eruption, with another 192 listed missing, according to the Associated Press.

Firefighters' spokesperson Julio Sanchez said Tuesday that 72 hours after Sunday's eruption there will be little chance of finding anyone alive. Hundreds have been injured, and the death toll is expected to continue to rise, as rescue workers have not been able to identify all of the bodies due to the high temperatures.

People who lived in the area are now staying in temporary shelters.

"The people ended up buried in almost 3 metres of lava", Ortiz said.

As President Jimmy Morales toured the area and met with survivors on Monday, a woman begged him to help her loved ones in Los Lotes.

"It is very hard for us to identify them because some of the dead lost their features or their fingerprints" from the red-hot flows, said Fanuel Garcia, director of the National Institute of Forensic Sciences. My children say they would rather be in the streets.

As rescuers work to search for almost 200 missing people, they're finding and rescuing pets as well.

Traffic came to a standstill on choked roads and many without vehicles fled on foot, even from the city of Escuintla, which is located about 15 kilometres from the volcano and was not under an evacuation order.
