Sane cut from Germany squad for World Cup; Neuer included

Manchester City's Leroy Sane has been surprisingly left out of Germany's squad that will travel to Russian Federation.

Those efforts were enough to see the 22-year-old named PFA Young Player of the Year, with a Carabao Cup win providing another memorable high in a productive campaign.

However, instead of Sane, Germany Coach Joachim Löw opted for the likes of Julian Draxler, Marco Reus, Julian Brandt and Sebastian Rudy.

Sane's City teammate, Ilkay Gundogan was, however, included in the team as well as regulars like Mesut Ozil, Toni Kroos, Sami Khedira and Jerome Boateng.

Germany and Belgium have become the latest countries to confirm their 23-man squads for the upcoming World Cup. Draxler, Reus and Muller are set.

"Leroy has a huge talent and he'll be there again, and we'll have to work more with him again from September onwards".

The 'keeper said his careful reintroduction had been a deliberate ploy - he didn't play a single match for Bayern before joining up with the national squad. "If it was a 100 metre race, it would have been a photo finish".

Sane, who joined the English champions in 2016, had been a surprise addition to Germany's Euro 2016 squad two years ago but this time he was overlooked by Loew, who opted to take the more physical Julian Brandt to Russian Federation instead.

'It's as if you are stood at the check in desk for your flight to Moscow, but are then prevented from boarding'.

Defending champions Germany will begin their campaign against Mexico on June 17 before facing Sweden (June 23) and South Korea (June 27).
