Zverev avoids defeat as Dimitrov exits French Open

Zverev, 21, who is seen as the main threat to Rafael Nadal´s expected coronation as champion for an 11th time, endured a nightmare outing on Court Philippe Chatrier that lasted nearly four hours.

Could this be the turning point for Zverev at Grand Slams? When you're down a match point, you're not thinking, Oh, how am I going to turn this match around?

"I'm young, so I might as well stay on court and practise a little bit", said Zverev.

He hit 73 unforced errors, dropped serve eight times and served up seven double faults before setting up a last-16 duel against either Lucas Pouille or Russia's Karen Khachanov. In the victory, Khachanov won 78 percent of his first serve points and 61 percent of his second serve points. Khachanov is hitting the ball with confidence, looking to be aggressive and is doing a good job of controlling the point. Khachanov is in his second career fourth round appearance in a grand slam and hopes to make his first ever grand slam quarterfinal.

But while Dzumhur - who has never been beyond the third round of a major - may have felt the nerves, the 21-year-old German played some big points at crucial moments - in a match one suspects he would have lost in recent times. Khachanov has split his last six matches on clay court.

Germany´s Alexander Zverev celebrates after victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina´s Damir Dzumhur at the end of their men´s singles third round match, on day six of The Roland Garros 2018 French Open in Paris on June 1, 2018. The match took 23 games to be decided. I'm also a little anxious about Zverev and his fitness, as all this tennis is eventually going to catch up to him. You can't bet against Zverev until he gives you a reason to.

"I'm not concerned. Mental, definitely not, because, you know, I'm in the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam", he added.
