Bryan Colangelo Bracing for Firing as 76ers Investigation Focuses on His Wife

Colangelo reportedly surrendered his cell phone to investigators.

The Ringer reported Colangelo was directly connected to Twitter accounts used to share privileged information and issue attacks on players and personnel connected with the Sixers.

Philadelphia 76ers executive Bryan Colangelo could end up losing his job over the social media scandal that the basketball world had been fixated on earlier this week. Philadelphia announced it would investigate the executive's role in the matter.

According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski and Zach Lowe, the 76ers are now seriously considering Colangelo's dismissal.

Bryan Colangelo missed predraft workouts on Wednesday and Thursday.

Some league sources expect him to lose his job after a NY law firm hired by the team wraps up its investigation into allegations from a sports and pop culture website that Colangelo is connected to anonymous Twitter accounts, ones that have revealed sensitive team information and criticized players and coach Brett Brown.

However, he told Yahoo Sports via a text Wednesday, "Someone's out to get me".

"The only way that he'll get out of it is if he comes with evidence that somebody set him up", said a league executive, speaking on condition of anonymity.

League sources don't think Colangelo will keep his job even if it's proven that Bottini or another family was behind the burner accounts. However, things do not look promising for Colangelo at the moment.

The source added, unless the perpetrator made some mistakes, it would be hard to definitively prove who tweeted out the information.

An outside law firm was hired by the 76ers to conduct the investigation. Sources say, he told upper management that his wife may be responsible for the accounts and tweets, but vehemently denied having any knowledge of them, until the ringer article came out. But he also insisted to those inside and outside of the investigation that he had nothing to do with the tweets and was unaware of them until The Ringer brought them to the team's attention prior to publishing the story.

"I talked to [Colangelo], and he said that he didn't say that", Embiid told ESPN. "So I have no information beyond that other than that investigation is underway". There could be a whole treasure trove out there of anonymous accounts sniping at Sam Hinkie, Joel Embiid, Markelle Fultz and others who the general manager of an National Basketball Association team (and his wife) should not be sniping at.
