France offers citizenship to Malian immigrant who scaled building to rescue child

The father of the young child who was rescued after dangling from a balcony in Paris, France, was reportedly playing Pokemon Go when the tense situation occurred.

The dad faces up to two years in prison for abandoning his parental responsibilities and will be sentenced in September, Paris prosecutor spokesman Bruno Badre said.

The 22-year-old ended up scaling the front of the building, pulling himself up from balcony to balcony, until he made it to the 4-year-old and pulled him to safety from midair. "The fire brigade of Paris is ready to welcome him", the French leader wrote on Twitter.

The rescuer's name is Mamoudou Gassama, an undocumented 22-year-old immigrant from Mali, who is now being feted as a national hero despite having lived in France for less than six months.

The migrant admitted he was "trembling" after the rescue, but told the French president: "When I started to climb, it gave me courage to keep climbing".

According to reports, the young hero was in the area to watch a football match when he noticed the commotion and sprung into action.

"I am hoping I can meet him", said the mother, who was heading to Paris to see her son.

"Thank God, I scaled the front of the building to that balcony", Gassama said.

"I did it because it was a child", Mr Gassama told French newspaper Le Parisien. The mother was not in Paris at the time, it is believed.

Gassama also spoke to Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo. We're sure some adrenaline helped, too - and maybe a radioactive spider bite.

Then he saw the boy, whom authorities later said was 4.

The president is behind a bill toughening French immigration law, and he stressed there is no contradiction between rewarding Mr Gassama for his act of bravery and working to prevent migrants from entering France illegally by stopping the stream of arrivals at its source. "I was talking to him at the same time, I was telling him, 'Come up slowly, '" he said, adding: "He had extraordinary courage".

Reacting to Gassama's intervention on Antenne Reunion radio late Monday, the woman, who was not identified, said: "We can only thank him and thank heaven he was so reactive".
