After Donald Trump's withdrawal from nuclear pact, European Union energy chief courts Iran

In a Monday's interview with the Spanish newspaper El Pais, Araqchi raised questions on European Union commitment to the nuclear deal following withdrawal of the United States. "Countries have their own independence", Rouhani said in a statement, according to Iranian news agencies.

Under a portrait of the late Iranian revolutionary founder Ayatollah Khomeini, worshippers chant slogans in a pro-Palestinian rally in Tehran.

Iran's Foreign Minister Javad Zarif tweeted, "US diplomacy sham is merely a regression to old habits: imprisoned by delusions & failed policies-dictated by corrupt Special Interest-it repeats the same wrong choices and will thus reap the same ill rewards. The priority is that the JCPOA should work first and then we can hold talks", the Iranian diplomat said.

The re-establishment of the U.S. punitive measures will likely force European companies to choose between investing in Iran or trading with the United States.

Pompeo vowed to crank up the pressure on Iran with "the strongest sanctions in history", saying the USA wanted "the support of our most important allies and partners in the region and around the globe" to implement it. "Whoever wants to halt Iran's aggression and whoever wants to ensure security, and whoever wants to advance peace must oppose Iran and support the American position". "We acknowledge Iran's right to defend its people".

The world's experience with regime change in Iraq should make clear why this is a bad idea.

"It's hard to imagine that Pompeo or anyone else thinks this is actually going to happen", said Benjamin Friedman, a fellow at the conservative Defense Priorities think tank in Washington.

Jannati is probably one of the most hardline ayatollahs in Iran; he heads not only the Assembly of Experts, charged with choosing and replacing the supreme leader, but also the Guardian Council, which is responsible for vetting candidates during the elections.

If Iran wants to escape sanctions, it must comply on a range of issues that go beyond its nuclear ambitions.

According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said during a meeting with his Chinese counterpart on the sidelines of the G20 foreign ministers' summit in Argentina that the exit from the Iran nuclear deal would be a catastrophe.

Trump's move came despite the fact that the UN's nuclear watchdog, in charge of monitoring Iran's compliance with the deal, has confirmed that Tehran has abided by the terms of the agreement.

He also called for a full stop to Iran's enrichment of uranium, which was sharply curbed by the Iran deal, and for worldwide monitors to gain "unqualified access" to all sites, including military facilities that Iran considers off-limits.

But EU officials admit there is a limit to what they can do to parry sanctions as a wave of European companies quit business with Tehran, fearing the global reach of USA sanctions. Iran has no nuclear weapons and has significantly curbed its program. Iran has denied ever wanting to build nuclear arms.

Pompeo echoed Trump's complaints about the Obama-era nuclear deal, saying it had "fatal flaws" because some elements had time limits and it focused only on Iran's nuclear program, not its other problematic behavior. Currently, inspectors must outline the basis for their suspicions. "If they choose their commercial interest is to trade with US and not to seek new contract with Iran, that's for them".
