Young supports Israeli response to Gaza protests

"Israel has the right to defend herself".

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas called on residents across the occupied West Bank to hold a general strike on Tuesday in honour of those killed in the Gaza Strip. Israel's ambassador, meanwhile, called for condemning Hamas.

The Palestinian Foreign Ministry announced the recall for consultations of its envoys in Romania, Hungary, Austria and the Czech Republic, citing those European Union members' participation in an official Israeli reception on Sunday for a United States delegation that inaugurated the American Embassy in Jerusalem.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel had tallied similar numbers to Hamas', and "won't let those who call for our destruction to breach our borders and to threaten our communities".

On Wednesday, Israeli artillery batteries shelled three Hamas-affiliated outposts near the Gaza-Israel fence.

It's just one of dozens of funerals taking place in the Gaza strip after Monday's clashes between Palestinian protesters and Israeli troops, the region's worst day of violence there in four years. No casualties were reported by either side.

Israel launched an overnight raid in Gaza after it said gunfire from the territory targeted its soldiers and damaged a building.

In fact, Al-Zahar seemed somewhat miffed that his interviewer suggested that the Gaza protests were "peaceful". Fridays normally see protesters turn out in larger numbers.

The demonstration in Gaza Monday culminated a weekslong Palestinian campaign against a blockade imposed by Israel and Egypt after Hamas seized control of Gaza in 2007. The State Department said Tuesday the draft "was too one-sided" and unacceptable to the US because it did not mention Hamas' incitement of violence along the Gaza border.

The comments sparked a widespread debate about whether Israel or the vociferously anti-Israel Hamas, which claimed the victims as their own martyrs, was to blame for the deaths.

The officers, whom the army insisted could not be identified, rejected the outcry from critics, saying that each day of protests they had witnessed attacks on the fence and military infrastructure, and that Hamas had exploited the civilian protesters in order to try to break through.

"The Hamas leadership is a group of cannibals who treat their children as armament", he said during a visit to a military base in southern Israel. Gaza has one of the highest rates of unemployment in the world. The factions said the fasting would be taken into account but marches would continue through early June.

The Palestinians said they consider the participation a "grave violation of global law". Abandon the fantasy that says Israel will disappear.

But the Hamas official, Salah Bardawil, did not give further details about whether they were members of the group's armed or political wing, or what they were doing at the time they were killed.

Israeli officials quickly seized upon his remarks.

The killings took place as Donald Trump's daughter Ivanka was opening the new USA embassy in Jerusalem. Paraguay is slated to do the same next week.

President Erdoğan, whose powers have been expanded since a referendum past year abolished the Turkish Prime Minister's office, rejected the USA embassy's move. Those talks have been stalled since 2014.

Israel regards all of the city, including the eastern sector it annexed after the 1967 conflict, as its capital.

The pan-African body reiterated its solidarity with the Palestinian people in "their legitimate quest for an independent and sovereign state with East Jerusalem as its capital".
