US Senate panel advances Trump nominee to lead Central Intelligence Agency

In comments aimed at clarifying her position on now-banned torture techniques, Haspel said she would "refuse to undertake any proposed activity that is contrary to my moral and ethical values".

She is a career intelligence official, but her nomination has been controversial because she was involved in the CIA's post-9/11 program of detaining and harshly interrogating terror suspects. As noted, it's expected that Haspel's nomination will be taken up on the Senate floor rather quickly and we could see a final floor vote as later this week.

The Senate intelligence committee voted 10-5 on Wednesday to recommend the full Senate confirm Haspel.

"Ms. Haspel is cynically trying to offer mere words in an attempt to win votes to support her confirmation", said Gen. Charles Krulak, former commandant of the Marine Corps.

CIA Director nominee Gina Haspel departs her confirmation hearing before the Senate Intelligence Committee on Capitol Hill in Washington, U.S., May 9, 2018.

The committee's eight Republicans were joined by Democratic Sens. "Her refusal to acknowledge torture's immorality is disqualifying".

The Senate Intelligence Committee, under the leadership of Feinstein, investigated the CIA's interrogation and detainment program for terrorists in 2014.

Responding to the committee's vote on Wednesday, Daphne Eviatar of Amnesty International USA said, "Due to the overwhelming public evidence suggesting Haspel's participation and compliance with crimes including torture, enforced disappearance, and obstruction of justice, Haspel's nomination is an affront to human rights". Richard Burr said, "Gina Haspel is the most qualified person the President could choose to lead the Central Intelligence Agency".

'Gina Haspel is the most qualified person the President could choose to lead the CIA and the most prepared nominee in the 70 year history of the Agency, ' Burr said Wednesday.

She joined the agency's Counterterrorism Center on September 11, 2001, the day when Al-Qaeda operatives hijacked and crashed four United States airliners, leaving nearly 3,000 dead. The full Senate could hold a confirmation vote before the end of the week. And in 2005, under her boss's direction, she drafted a cable ordering the agency to destroy more than 90 videotapes of its interrogation of that man. They include Mark Warner of Virginia, Joe Manchin of West Virginia, Joe Donnelley of Indiana, Bill Nelson of Florida and Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota.

Reed cited the opposition of John McCain, his Republican counterpart on Armed Services, to buttress his argument against Haspel. "Most importantly, I believe she is someone who can and will stand up to the president if ordered to do something illegal or immoral - like a return to torture".

"With the benefit of hindsight and my experience as a senior agency leader, the enhanced interrogation program is not one the CIA should have undertaken", she told Warner in the letter dated Monday. Full Senate approval is the right outcome for Ms. Haspel as well.
