United Nations chief welcomes North Korea's closure of nuke test site

The respected 38 North website said Tuesday that satellite images dated May 7 showed "the first definitive evidence that dismantlement of the test site was already well under way".

North Korea gave details on Saturday on the planned dismantling of the Punggye-ri site where it is believed to have carried out all six of its nuclear tests.

The settlement to close the North Korean Nuclear Test Site was reached at the talks between South Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korean Leader Kim Jong-no on April 27.

According to the KCNA announcement, the North will invite local press, but worldwide media will be limited to journalists from China, Russia, South Korea, Britain and the United States, due to the testing ground's "small space". He did not specify what the military had seen. "Some of the rails for the mining carts, which had led from the tunnels to their respective spoil piles, have apparently been removed".

But not all buildings have been demolished yet, the researchers concluded.

The South Korean news agency Yonhap reported on the threatened cancellation, the first hitch in talks about the summit since Trump announced March 8 he had accepted Kim's invitation.

"The Nuclear Weapon Institute and other concerned institutions are taking technical measures for dismantling the northern nuclear test ground.in order to ensure transparency of discontinuance of the nuclear test", North Korean press agency KCNA said earlier this week.

South Korea has said Kim has shown an interest in dealing away his nuclear weapons in return for economic benefits.

Journalists from China, Russia, the United States and the United Kingdom will also attend the event.

North Korea will invite foreign journalist, but not experts, to observe the destruction of the Punggye-ri nuclear test site.

One particular worry is that if North Korea does not destroy its knowledge on nuclear weaponry, it could carry out research in secret and resume a nuclear weapons programme at short notice enabling the country to sell the data to other nations or terrorist groups.

But local people and Algeria's government said the tests - including the 1962 "Beryl Incident" when radioactive rock and dust escaped from an underground nuclear blast - left a legacy of environmental devastation and health problems that last today.

North Korea blew up a cooling tower at the nuclear facility in 2007 following a deal with the U.S., but soon restarted the reactor.

Last week, the North Koreans released three USA prisoners, clearing the way for Trump to announce the date and location of the summit with Kim.

It will mark the first summit between a sitting United States president and a North Korean leader.

The dismantling of the nuclear test site is welcome news, but it follows assertions by the regime that North Korea has completed its nuclear force and achieved its historic mission.

The United States is also offering "security assurances" to North Korea if they're able to forge an agreement.
