Officer who hid during Parkland school shooting awarded $11575-a-month pension

Despite resigning in disgrace after the Parkland school shooting, former Broward Sheriff's Office deputy Scot Peterson is receiving a generous state pension that will pay him more than he made in his previous year on the force.

Peterson was the subject of considerable criticism in the wake of the shooting after reports emerged that the sheriff's deputy chose to remain outside the school rather than enter when the gunman began opening fire. Broward Sheriff Scott Israel said Peterson should have gone inside. "Until the shooting, he was considered a trusted school resource officer at Stoneman Douglas, according to annual reviews of his performance", writes the Sentinel.

Shooting suspect Nikolas Cruz has been jailed since the shooting.

The mass shooting left 17 people dead and dozens injured.

Peterson resigned and retired February 22, a week after the massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, where he waited outside as Nikolas Cruz killed 17 people and wounded 17 others.

This runs contrary to police dispatch audio, in which Mr Peterson reported shots as coming from "inside the 1200 building".

The father of one of the student victims of the Valentine's Day massacre, Andrew Pollack, meanwhile has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against eight people and entities, including Peterson.

Pollack later tweeted, "The coward of broward, Scot Peterson is getting over $8k a month pension!"

The Sun Sentinel further reported that Peterson will be entitled to these payments for life. He hid while my daughter and 16 others were slaughtered!

State Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D), a Stoneman Douglas alumnus who represents the district in the Florida Legislature, also called on Gov. Rick Scott (R) to block Peterson's pension. That money should go to actually securing our schools! The pension was calculated based on the thirty-two years he spent with the Broward Sheriff's Office and is based on an average of his five highest-paid years. He faces 17 charges of first-degree murder.
