It contains Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, two-thirds of which remain closed.

According to the Hawaii Tourism Authority's (HTA) most recent statement issued on Tuesday, "plumes of steam and ash are being emitted from Kilauea summit in Hawaii causing ash to fall downwind across portions of the southern district of Kau".

The USGS changed the volcano's warning level to red alert on Tuesday, indicating that a major eruption is imminent and that ash could pose a threat on land as well as in the air for aviation.

Lava from active fissures illuminates volcanic gases from the Kilauea volcano as stars shine on Hawaii's Big Island on May 15, 2018 in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Hawaii.

Kilauea volcano has gobbled up lush landscape, destroyed houses and caused almost 2,000 people to flee their homes.

There are fresh code red warnings for toxic levels of sulphur dioxide after a risky ash cloud pumped volcanic smog up to 12,000 feet into the air.

Hawaii's Kilauea volcano could have a major devastating eruption at "any time", the US Geographical Survey has said. Most of these earthquakes are related to the ongoing subsidence of the summit area and earthquakes beneath the south flank of the volcano.

Ash has been wafting continuously from a vent in the crater reported as far as 18 miles away.

The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reported that fissures opened just east of the Puna Geothermal Venture energy conversion plant.

Hawaii Fire Department reports that air quality is condition RED around fissures in the southeast area of Lanipuna Gardens and surrounding farm lots on Pohoiki Road. The eruption has destroyed 25 homes and covered 115 acres in lava.

On Tuesday, officials said activity at Fissure 17, the biggest one so far, had slowed overnight.

The lava lake in the crater has been dropping since May 2, which increases the chances for a phreatic explosion. The observatory also warned that the eruption could become more violent.
