Tiger Woods makes huge claim after thrilling weekend at The Players Championship

Webb Simpson heard the roars echoing across TPC Sawgrass as Tiger Woods made a charge but in the end he had a large enough cushion to clinch a comfortable four-stroke victory at the Players Championship on Sunday. "I got it down to four and figured I had to make a few more birdies", Woods said.

Danny Lee of New Zealand walks off the green on the 17th hole during THE PLAYERS Championship 2018.

Simpson's lead was down to four shots when he bogeyed the 10th, but he moved to 20-under for the tournament with birdies at the two par-fives on the back nine, the 11th and 16th.

Spieth's quadruple-bogey 8 at the final hole condemned him to a T-41 finish. I'm always pretty diligent about doing the exercises, so every week it's gradually gotten better and better. But a back-nine 35 showed that he's not. Simpson spoke about his play on the greens after the anchor ban.

As for Tiger, he didn't have quite as much fun, hitting the water at the famed hole for the first time in 13 years en route to a double-bogey.

"It was harder than I thought", Simpson said. "But I've to do some work between now and then".

Paul Tesori, Webb Simpson's caddy, describes their win at The Players Championship, and where it stacks up against Simpson's U.S. Open title.

"I think I messed him up", Spieth said. South African Charl Schwartzel (67) and Americans Xander Schauffele (67) and Jimmy Walker (67) tied for second on 14-under.

"I feel like it's my first win", he admitted of a success that threw up an interesting fact in that Simpson ranked first in driving accuracy and last in driving distance in the event. He shot 15-under through 36 holes; three players were tied for second. Woods made a soft bogey on the 14th hole when he missed the green with a sand wedge, and was well short of the island green in making double bogey on No. 17.

He followed that up with a 69 on Sunday to end at -11 and tied-11th for the tournament.

I've never really played well today, but I enjoyed the golf course. It's nice to finally shoot a low one.

It was all but a given the Simpson would win after he blitzed the course over the first three days.

US Open champion Brooks Koepka had earlier equalled the course record at Sawgrass thanks to just the second albatross on the 16th in tournament history.

The only question that remained was would he break Greg Norman's 1994 scoring record of 24-under par for the tournament? He had gone to a longer handle that ran up the left side of his arm, and then Tim Clark gave him the missing link.

"There's no way I would have predicted I would be at this point the beginning of the year", he said.

To win it on Mother's Day almost brought him to tears. In November of past year, Simpson's father Sam passed away after a long battle with Parkinson's.

The low point was 2016 at the start of the FedEx Cup playoffs, when he started to get short with his caddie, and they sat in the vehicle in the parking lot at Bethpage Black talking about how to move forward.

The rest of the tournament would have been plenty exciting had Simpson chose to call in sick for work this week.

The one thing he couldn't afford was a mistake and he was unfortunate in suffering one at the 14th, where his par putt lipped out.
