Slain Indiana cop's son greeted by officers on return to school

His dad, Rob Pitts, was a 16-year veteran of the Terre Haute Police Department and was killed in a shootout between police and a suspect on May 4, according to the department.

"He will definitely know that his dad was a hero". Wolfe was suspected of fatally shooting a 26-year-old man at a home in Terre Haute.

Rob, a 16-year veteran of the force, left behind a wife and his 5-year-old son, Dakota.

Dakota was given his own badge and a SWAT t-shirt when he arrived at the school in Sullivan, Ind. Wolfe was armed with a handgun and fired at the officers, striking Pitts.

The officers weren't just from Terre Haute, where Dakota's dad Rob Pitts was an officer.

Rob is deeply missed, but we are grateful for the time we had with him.

The SWAT team entered the apartment around 9:15pm and located Wolfe who was also killed in the gunfire exchange. Thank you for your continued prayers, ' Terre Haute police spokesman Ryan Adamson said Saturday.

"It's a brotherhood", said Detective Les Hamm.

Chief John Plasse held a news conference to announce Pitts death.

Governor Eric Holcomb tweeted his condolences to Pitts' family.

"I hope that what happened today is a memory that he will keep forever, because that's what we want, we want him to have good memories". Especially for a fallen officer and his kid.
