China's first locally made aircraft carrier starts trials at sea

China's first domestically designed aircraft carrier set out its maiden sea trial on Sunday morning, indicating it might not be long before it is delivered to the Chinese Navy.

Both Chinese aircraft carriers have similar "ski jump" ramps, and closely resemble Soviet style vessels.

Now in service with China has two aircraft carriers.

The new aircraft carrier's first sea voyage is the latest milestone in China's move to modernize its military, a plan which also includes developing stealth jets and anti-satellite missiles.

CNN reports it'll join the Chinese navy sometime before 2020.

Some reports said China is also planning to build a nuclear aircraft carrier.

The new ship began in 2013.

The Type 001A was launched in April 2017.

Little is known about China's aircraft program which is a state secret, according to the news wire.

In addition, the carrier is first built on their own.

Once an aircraft carrier passes its sea trials, that doesn't mean it's ready for combat.

Neither of the two vessels is nuclear-powered; instead, they use conventional oil-fueled steam turbine power plants for propulsion. China previous year established its first overseas military base in the Horn of Africa nation of Djibouti, where rivals such as the U.S., Japan and several European nations also have a permanent presence.

Nevertheless, Beijing has actually started a comprehensive job to develop a "blue water" navy and modernise its 2 million-strong military, the world's biggest.

The country has used its naval fleet to stake claim to virtually the entire South China Sea and to range farther into the Pacific and Indian oceans.

The second aircraft carriers name and hull code remain unknown as the PLA Navy usually makes public such information when a ship is commissioned.

American sea power is expected to continue dominating over the next 10 years, but China is fast developing capabilities to maintain presence in distant waters.

Last week, United States intelligence assessed that there is a high probability the Chinese military had deployed anti-ship and anti-aircraft missiles to three artificial islands there during recent military drills.
