Trump hails capture of 5 most-wanted IS leaders

Al-Eithawi, a top aide to ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, was captured in February by Turkish authorities and handed over to Iraqi agents, a security advisor to the Iraqi government said on Thursday.

"These arrests are a significant blow to ISIS, as we continue to remove its leadership and fighters from the battlefield", Rankine-Galloway said.

The group has been shown on Iraqi TV dressed in yellow prison uniforms.

In a statement Thursday, May 10, 2018, coalition spokesman Army Col. Ryan Dillon said that US -backed Syrian forces have captured five senior Islamic State group leaders.

The ISIS officials were captured in a joint operation carried about by American and Iraqi intelligence, according to The New York Times.

Two Iraqi officials explained to the NY daily, on condition of anonymity, that they had been following the trail of several of the IS leaders for months, but early this year they received intelligence information that led to their arrests.

The arrested included four Iraqis and one Syrian, all of whom were in charge of governing ISIS' territory around Deir ez-Zor, Syria, and directing internal security and running the administrative body that oversees religious rulings. Could 2017 be a year of terror?

Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi declared nationwide victory over Islamic State in December, five months after his forces recaptured Iraq's main northern city Mosul in a protracted battle with the jihadist militants.

Hashimi referred to Eithawi and Jamal as "the two most senior Islamic State figures ever to be captured alive".

The information from Ithawi was also used by the USA -led Coalition to launch an airstrike in mid-April that killed 39 suspected ISIS members near Hajin, in the Deir ez-Zor district of Syria.

The tweet was flooded with praise for the USA president.
