Wenger "confident" Wilshere will sign Arsenal extension

What was at first serious Achilles tendon injury nearly led the midfielder having his foot amputated past year, after contracting a gangrenous infection from surgery.

"We are Arsenal and we want to win matches", Wenger said during his pre-match press conference on Thursday. I hope, at some stage, he'll sign it.

"I haven't seen him since the League Cup final", said Wenger.

The midfielder has reportedly told friends that he doesn't expect Arsenal to make him a better offer to keep him at The Emirates beyond the end of this season.

Mesut Ozil was in a similar position to Wilshere earlier in the year but signed a vastly-improved deal to end speculation over his own future.

And Keown has now pinpointed exactly where his former side are going wrong when they play away from the Emirates.

"If you think like that, there's no limitations anywhere", he said.

Henrik Mkhitaryan could return to Arsenal's line up in time for their first leg meeting with Atletico Madrid in the Europa League semi-final.

Wenger and his men are now focused on winning the Europa League having lost out of the Premier League top four.

"This weekend is preparation for Thursday", he explained.

As is seemingly always the case at Arsenal, there are other players whose futures remain up in the air.

Wenger also provided an update on Santi Cazorla and says the midfielder is progressing well with his recovery from a serious ankle injury that's kept him out for over 18 months. But his England pull-out during the last global break does not bode well for his hopes of making the World Cup squad, or of landing the mega contract from the Gunners that he is clearly holding out for.

"The last news I heard is that he is doing very well", Wenger said after revealing he had not spoken to Cazorla since the Carabao Cup final. But I believe that, if you look at our numbers and how much people want to renew tickets for next season, I don't believe that we have a major problem.

The Arsenal boss hinted that the striker may not play against West Ham United.

"I know for a fact that Patrick Vieira would die for the chance of managing Arsenal. I hope so, but I don't know".
