Moscow court blocks access to Telegram in Russian Federation

A Russian court ordered the messenger app Telegram to be blocked in the country for denying Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) access to the content of messages sent through the app's encrypted service. Russia's Supreme Court rejected the company's suit on March 20 of this year, and granted Telegram 15 days to provide access to the FSB. However, Telegram has so far refrained from breaking its encryption for Russian Federation and has said that state security services will get access to user messages.

The Russian government has started to block messaging app Telegram, according to reports from the local news agency Tass. He added that FSB's demand that his client must provide access to private conversations of users is not only unconstitutional but baseless and can not be fulfilled technically and legally.

Roskomnadzor, the Russian communications and technology watchdog, had demanded that the app be blocked. The authorities, including Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB), argued that terrorist plot attacks on the app that boasts 200 million users.

Given how widely Telegram is used, a suspension of service is bound to affect users in the country. He claimed on Twitter that the threats to block Telegram will not bear a fruit.

To their dismay, Telegram refused to give them access to the encrypted messages, citing the importance of user privacy. "What matters most is privacy which is not for sale and more to that human rights should not be compromised out of greed or fear".

"The irony is that those in the Kremlin and government often use the service to communicate with journalists", a British journalist based in Russian Federation told i.

The court decision on Telegram is meant to make one of the last holdouts among communications companies bow to Putin's efforts to track electronic messaging.

The fate of the ongoing conflict between Russia's telecommunications supervisory body, Roskomnadzor, and the messaging app, Telegram, has been decided by the courts. Providers will block the app starting from April 16. Mr Durov, who was forced to sell his remaining stake in Russia's largest social network, VK, to a Kremlin-friendly billionaire in 2014, has said Telegram can't be bought - at any price. Both opposition politicians and Kremlin officials use it to stay in touch, and self-described insiders publish anonymous leaks of varying reliability from inside the halls of power.
