RNC Running Point on Campaign to Discredit Comey

RNC Running Point on Campaign to Discredit Comey

ABC calls the RNC's plan "aggressive" and CNN calls it "extensive", noting that the RNC is also setting up a war room to track Comey's media appearances and respond in real time.

The Republican National Committee is poised to lead the public effort to counter Comey, who is set to do a series of interviews to promote the book, by launching a website and supplying surrogates with talking points that question the former director's credibility.

An interview with Mr Comey, in which he is thought to speak candidly about Mr Trump's behaviour and the Russian Federation investigation, will air on Sunday night in the US.

The President's firing of Comey set into motion a cascading series of events that continue to complicate and cloud the Trump presidency.

Comey reportedly recalls that Kelly, who later became White House chief of staff, said he "didn't want to work for dishonorable people", referring specifically to President Trump. "If Comey wants the spotlight back on him, we'll make sure the American people understand why he has no one but himself to blame for his complete lack of credibility".

A senior White House official disputed Comey's characterization of the phone call with Kelly, saying that Kelly has maintained that the call was brief-roughly a minute long-and that the gist was, "I don't know why you got fired, [and] best of luck to you", according to the official.

But some Republicans have abstained from publicly criticizing Comey before his book tour. Sen.

"Comey has a long history of misstatements and misconduct" as well as "bizarre decisions, contradictory statements and acting against Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Investigation protocol".

Republicans will highlight Democratic criticism of Comey over his handling of the investigation into Hillary Clinton's email. Mrs Clinton's supporters believed that the investigation was politically motivated and aided Mr Trump's campaign.

Last month, Trump also lashed out at Comey, accusing him of lying under oath.
