Dirty deeds in high places nothing new to South Koreans

Former South Korean president Park Geun-hye was sentenced to 24 years in prison on Friday, a year after she was ousted from office over charges of corruption. As well as the prison sentence she was also fined $17 million.

"The main blame. lies with former president Park herself", Kim said.

Media reports indicate that they refused to appear because the court had chosen to broadcast the judgment live, the first time such would happen in South Korea.

Park, 66, who has been in jail since March 31 a year ago, has denied wrongdoing and was not present in court.

The former leader previously denied any wrongdoing, and the sentence was announced in her absence.

The court agreed that Park planned an elaborate extortion scheme with a confidant, Choi Soon-sil.

2006: Park, the leader of the main conservative opposition party, is attacked by a man wielding a box cutter while she was campaigning for upcoming elections.

Following the nation-wide protests past year, a vote by the National Assembly and a unanimous decision by the Constitutional Court lead to Park's impeachment over helping Choi. Prosecutors previously alleged that Samsung's bribe was aimed at getting government support for a smooth company leadership transition, but the court said there was not enough evidence to prove that Samsung sought such favor from the government.

Moon's office described Park's fate as "heartbreaking" for the nation.

Prosecutors in February recommended a punishment of 118.5 billion won in fines in addition to a 30-year prison term.

Park's sentencing has drawn a line under what has been one of the biggest corruption scandals to rock South Korea in recent years.

Park's friendships with Choi, 61, began in the mid-1970s when Choi's late father served as Park's mentor after her mother's assassination.

Up to 1,000 Park supporters gathered outside the court, holding national flags and signs calling for an end to "political revenge" against her.

A South Korea court is set to issue a verdict Friday, April 6, 2018, on disgraced former President Park over a corruption scandal.

Park Geun Hye's lawyer has stated that he will be speaking to Park Geun Hye about filing an appeal, and will announce the decision later on. He was sentenced to 2.5 years in prison.

In December 2016 Park was impeached by Parliament over a massive corruption scandal.

Millions of South Koreans took to the streets previous year demanding the end of Park's government, and they succeeded in having her impeached. She was charged and detained soon after her dismissal from office.

Younger, liberal voters, who staged months of protests against Park before her ouster, will be hoping the verdict will mark a major step towards ending the self-serving collusion between political leaders and the chaebol conglomerates.
