Apple is working on new touchless controls for its displays

This would involve a screen where the actual middle of the display is lower than the top and bottom edges, resembling LG's Flex smartphone to an extent. Two major differences would radically change the iPhone as we know it: a curved screen and touchless control. OLED displays are capable of being shaped into curves or even folded, unlike LCD screens, which were used in older iPhones.

In the fourth quarter, Apple was responsible for about 20 percent of smartphone shipments following the launch of the iPhone X and iPhone 8, beating out second place Samsung and Huawei, according to IDC. You'll need to get pretty close to the screen, though, because the gestures rely on technology built into the display itself.

Apple did not immediately respond to PCMag's request for comment. This feature won't be ready for this year's new iPhones. They are rumored to have curved screens and feature touchless controls. It's the first iPhone from the company that doesn't feature a physical home button and has a display notch.

Samsung's version, called Air Gestures, basically allowed users to accept calls and flip through web pages by just waving their hand across the phone's top area where a motion sensor was situated. This new feature would work by detecting the user's proximity to the screen to determine what the person is trying to do. Google's ATAP research group has been working this sort of technology, too, through its Project Soli program. Last year, the company introduced its brand-new design strategy with the iPhone X and, unsurprisingly, this year's models are expected to follow in its footsteps. However, Apple's plans are significantly different concepts.
