Russian Federation inquiry: Lawyer jailed for 30 days

Alex van der Zwaan, 33, - who worked with Trump's former campaign chairman Paul Manafort - was also sentenced to two months of supervised release. Gates later took a plea deal and has been cooperating with investigators.

Van der Zwaan is the first person to receive punishment in relation to the probe into alleged dealings between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation during the 2016 election.

During his August 2016 meeting with Kilimnik, Manafort has said he and his longtime Kiev office manager discussed, among other topics, the ongoing campaign, including the hacking of Democratic National Committee emails. Mr Trump has not been accused of any wrongdoing.

Mueller has also indicted 13 Russians for their work to influence the 2016 presidential election through online social media.

Van der Zwaan was a London-based associate of a high-powered law firm called Skadden, Arps, Meagher & Flom in the early 2010s. He said Mueller, who was assigned to investigate potential coordination between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign, overstepped his bounds by charging him for conduct that occurred years before the 2016 presidential election.

Van der Zwaan had pleaded guilty in February.

His wedding to art critic Eva Khan featured in Russian Tatler magazine a year ago.

Mueller indicted van der Zwaan for making false statements of FBI investigators.

In court Tuesday, van der Zwaan said, "What I did was wrong".

Van der Zwaan is hoping to return to London as soon as possible following his incarceration according to his lawyers as van der Zwaan's wife is pregnant with their first child.

Alex van der Zwaan's father-in-law, German Khan, is one of the three oligarchs to appear in the DNC- and Clinton-funded Steele dossier, which makes bombastic and unproven allegations about the Trump campaigns supposed collusion with the Russian government.

The corporate lawyer was asked to produce a document to whitewash Yanukovich's arrest of Yulia Tymoshenko, a former prime minister who had mocked a Ukrainian court years before the 2016 elections.

The Skadden report has been controversial in Ukraine in part because its findings seemed to contradict the global community's conclusion that Tymoshenko had been unjustly jailed. "I apologize to my wife and my family", said van der Zwaan as he awaited sentencing.

He has been charged with a number of felony counts related to financial offenses - including money laundering, fraud and tax evasion, as well as for failing to register as a foreign lobbyist - in connection with his decade of work on behalf of a Russia-friendly Ukrainian political party before joining Trump's campaign.

None of the charges Manafort now faces alleges coordination with the Kremlin, and Manafort's attorneys had used that point to argue that Mueller had exceeded his authority by bringing charges against him accusing him of various financial crimes and acting as an unregistered foreign agent on behalf of Ukrainian interests. She told him his lies to federal investigators were not just a mistake and he should have known better because be is a lawyer.

Mr Trump has insisted there was no collusion.
