Trump Tweets "DACA Is Dead"

Trump Tweets

But starting on Sunday morning, Trump unleashed a flurry of tweets about the caravans - and seemed to conflate the group with DACA.

"Border Patrol Agents (and ICE) are GREAT, but the weak Dem laws don't allow them to do their job", he said, possibly referring to laws passed under Democratic administrations or congresses.

"Act now Congress, our country is being stolen!" he added in another tweet.

Brandon Judd, leader of the union representing border patrol agents, predicted on "Fox & Friends" that those in the caravan would create havoc and chaos in the U.S.as they wait for what he described as immigration reform.

He said that the US has "no effective border laws" and called on Congress to "immediately pass Border Legislation" again suggesting lawmakers invoke the "nuclear option" to abolish the filibuster.

Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) was established in 2012 by then-President Barack Obama, but Trump ordered its expiration for March (when it was protecting 690,000 people), a decision that was temporarily blocked by the courts.

Trump also falsely claimed that Democrats want "no borders" and don't care about the DACA-eligible immigrants known as Dreamers.

President Donald Trump declared as "dead" on Monday a program that protects immigrants brought to the United States illegally as children and pressed Congress to "immediately" pass legislation to secure the USA border with Mexico.

In the past, Trump had said he was open to a deal with congressional Democrats in which they would support funding for the border wall in exchange for protection for the Dreamers. Over the weekend, Trump spent time with immigration hardliners including his senior policy advisor Stephen Miller and Fox News host Sean Hannity.

Alex Mensing of Pueblos Sin Fronteras told ABC News that numerous caravan travelers are fleeing violence and that they are hoping to reach US ports of entry in Arizona, California, or New Mexico where they will claim asylum and likely be detained.

Trump then tied the North American Free Trade Agreement, now being re-negotiated by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, to Trump's campaign promise to build a border wall along the southern USA border. If they're not going to help us at the border, it's a very sad thing between our two countries. Currently, the program is not accepting any additional applications.

Q Mr. President, what did you mean by no DACA deal? They say some but not all of them will seek asylum if they reach the United States. "I love the Dreamers".

Those enrolled in DACA had pinned their hopes on Democrats, who had continuously promised to win permanent legal status for them.

Conservative reaction to the tweets was relatively muted, and no Republican member of Congress had a comment or statement Sunday afternoon.

His Easter Sunday comments on Twitter came in apparent response to the movement of hundreds of Central Americans who have joined a "migrant viacrucis" ("way of the cross") caravan headed for the U.S. border. "Sinclair is far superior to CNN and even more Fake NBC, which is a total joke", tweeted the president about criticism over a message Sinclair Broadcast Group had local news anchors deliver to their regional audiences.

Here's a closer look at Trump's tweets, fact-checked and with context. "Upholding human dignity and rights is not at odds with the rule of law", he wrote. "They deserve better than this", she replied to Trump's tweet.

ABC News, citing a Kremlin aide's comments to a Russian news outlet, reported the subject of a possible meeting in Washington, D.C., came during Trump's congratulatory call to Putin, who was re-elected as Russian president several days before.
