Malala visits native town in Pakistan amid high security

Mingora is where Malala's family was living and where she was attending school on October 9, 2012, when a gunman boarded her school bus, asked "Who is Malala?", and shot her. "We want to work for the education of children and make it possible that every girl in Pakistan receives a high-level education and she can fulfil her dreams and become a part of society".

The visit - on which she was accompanied by her father, mother, and two brothers - was kept tightly under wraps.

On Saturday, Yousafzai flew by helicopter to visit her childhood home in Swat Valley amid heavy security.

"I admire Malala because she strived to promote girls' education", said Amna Khan, 12, as she entered one of the schools in Mingora.

Malala won worldwide acclaim after she was shot by the Taliban for her campaign to improve education for women.

Pakistan's Nobel Peace Prize victor Malala Yousafzai has arrived in her hometown of Mingora for the first time since a Taliban militant shot her there in 2012 for advocating girls' education.

When Malala Yousufzai got Nobel Peace Prize in 2014, there were voices in Pakistan which ridiculed her being as a puppet of the western world.

It had been uncertain whether Ms. Yousafzai would be able to visit Swat, parts of which spent nearly two years under Pakistani Taliban militants' harsh interpretation of Islamic law, due to continued concerns for her safety. But, we are scared that her visit will bring this area in the limelight of the media and global attention.

Her family also told AFP of their joy in coming home.

He added that Malala chatted in her room with four friends from her school days in Swat, while her parents greeted neighbors who dropped by - since the security detail would not allow her to go to other houses or even up on the roof of her home. She was later flown to London for medical treatment.

"I am very happy that, after five-and-a-half years, I have set foot on the soil of my nation again", she said, according to the Guardian.

On Friday, speaking to Hamid Mir, anchor of Geo News programme Capital Talk, in her first interview to a news channel since returning to Pakistan, she said, "My plan is to return to Pakistan as this is my country". After being injured by the Taliban, Malala returned to Pakistan as a prominent social activist, but why is Pakistan not happy with her visit?

"The people of Swat and the whole of Pakistan are with Malala", family friend Jawad Iqbal Yousafzai said. Malala Yousufzai promoted and supported women's education in Pakistan which was against the Taliban ideology.

However she has also been met with pockets of intense criticism.

Her father was a teacher in a school that educated girls and managed to stay open until early 2009.

Yousafzai founded the Malala Fund, which invests in local educational initiatives for girls in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nigeria and Kenya, and in Jordan, where it focuses on Syrian refugees.

"What I want is people support my goal of education and think about the daughters of Pakistan who need an education".
