The man suspected of killing an off-duty officer in Hopkinsville was killed in Tennessee.

KSP Post 2 said KSP was notified by Tennessee law enforcement that James K. DeCoursey was located in Clarksville, Tennessee, where he had a brief encounter with law enforcement. Decoursey was shot and died from his injuries.

The TBI said it was investigating the circumstances of the shooting that killed DeCoursey.

Tributes poured in for Meacham, who served in the Christian County Sheriff's Office for 12 years before he joined the Hopkinsville Police Department in May 2017.

He was off-duty when he was pulled over at 5:10 p.m. local time (6:10 p.m. EDT) on Paulette court in Hopkinsville by the suspect pretending to be a police officer, daily newspaper Kentucky New Era reported.

Meacham, a 38-year-old married father-of-two, was taken to the Jenny Stuart Medical Center where he died.

Hopkinsville Police Chief Clayton Sumner told reporters mental health professionals and chaplains had been brought in to help Meacham's co-workers. At 8:07 p.m., he was still on the run and is considered armed and unsafe.

Decoursey may have then changed vehicles and police warn he should be treated as armed and unsafe. No law enforcement officers were injured in the Clarksville incident.

Gov. Matt Bevin announced the officer's death on Twitter. Meacham had more than 14 years of law enforcement experience in Christian County. "Thank God for the #ThinBlueLine".

Meanwhile, the man fled on foot and initially escaped by stealing a vehicle, police said.

The victim was in his personal vehicle when he is believed to have been pulled over and shot by the suspect in Hopkinsville, Kentucky on Thursday.
