If Microsoft Corp.'s employees didn't already realize cloud computing and artificial intelligence will drive their company's future much more than its venerable Windows software, they sure know it now. The new setup aims to leverage Microsoft's strongest businesses, like its Azure cloud service and Office 365 subscription software, while Windows gets deemphasized.

As part of the reorganization, work on Windows is set to be split up between two groups. Nadella said that Rajesh Jha, the company's executive vice president for its Product group, will take charge of the new Experiences and Devices division.

Microsoft's Terry Myerson who has been leading Microsoft's efforts in transforming Windows from a slow to update OS into a more regularly updated product to keep Windows fresh is out after 21 years of service. Just last month, Microsoft also added Debian and Kali Linux distros to the Windows Store.

Analyst Rob Enderle of the Enderle Group, meanwhile, sees Microsoft's new emphasis on hardware as part of a push to avoid falling behind the competition.

Clearly, Microsoft has a few teething problems to iron out of the known users groups facility, but at least its making moves to appease developers keen to work within the Windows ecosystem. He oversaw numerous company's products and services, including Windows, Xbox, and HoloLens. (Microsoft officials have predicted the company could have two-thirds of its Office users in the cloud by its fiscal 2019.) Now, it's trying to do something similar for Windows with Microsoft 365: Create a bundle of cloud services anchored by Windows 10 that will provide the company with a recurring revenue stream. Nadella's explanation for what he put under Guthrie was laden with industry jargon, but the point is to allow Microsoft to offer its apps and services via the cloud to everything from mobile phones to corporate servers.

AI Perception & Mixed Reality (MR): Alex Kipman will lead this new team, which brings together all our speech, vision, MR and additional perception capabilities into one team. The feature is now limited to Microsoft's Outlook, Hotmail, Live, and Office 365 services-anyone who uses Gmail, Yahoo, or Exchange Server calendars is going to miss out.
