New Entry-Level GoPro HERO Is Only $199, Available Now

The new Hero is half the price of the GoPro Hero6 Black (at $399.99 / £399.99 / AU$599.95), making it accessible to more people who'd like to capture their adventures (or misadventures as the case may be).

"HERO is a great first GoPro for people looking to share experiences beyond what a phone can capture", says Meghan Laffey, GoPro's SVP of Product, "HERO makes it easy to share "wow" moments at a price that's flawless for first-time users".

Within minutes of his purchase Ali says he saw staff removing the other entry-level GoPro Hero action cameras from the shelf. The price in India has been set a bit higher at Rs.18,990, and it is going to be sold as a Flipkart exclusive product.

The new Hero (CHDHB-501) is more affordable and slightly lower specced when compared to its more expensive counterparts. No 4K here. You can take up to 10-megapixel still photos and even submerge it in up to 10 metres of water. As you can probably guess, existing accessories from GoPro will also work with this unit. The 10MP camera is capable of recording HD video 60fps, with a resolution of 1440p and 1080p respectively. It lacks the optical image stabilization capabilities of the pricier cameras.

Mind you, in recent times, as the Hero series has become smarter, sharper and gathered features, the prices have been creeping up. The camera also supports QuikStories which is a feature that sends footage to the GoPro app, which will then be automatically transformed into a montage with music and other visual effects. Swiss National Bank owned 0.12% of GoPro worth $1,372,000 at the end of the most recent reporting period.

It's no secret that GoPro has been struggling, and the introduction of the Hero looks like an effort to right that ship.
