Matter with Uber 'resolved,' says lawyer for dead woman's family

The incident marked the first pedestrian death stemming from a traffic accident involving a self-driving vehicle and while preliminary results of Tempe PD's investigation suggest the autonomous Uber auto wasn't at fault for the accident, the firm promptly suspended all of its driverless technology trials throughout the United States.

As the WSJ reports, Gov. Ducey welcomed Uber and its self-driving vehicles into Arizona in 2016 with open arms after the company was kicked out of California as a way to look into improving public safety.

As well as revealing frequent and friendly interactions between the mayor, his office and Uber executives, Ducey also pressured local councilors in Phoenix to allow Uber to pick up passengers from the city's global airport.

"The incident that took place on March 18 is an unquestionable failure to comply with this expectation", Ducey said.

Uber is investigating the incident, especially since the same GPS-inspired mishap happened a few years ago back in 2014, when a Vina Cab driver turned down that same set of stairs. Now, one Uber executive has officially left the company while this mess plays out.

Uber fiercely denied it had any of Wamyo's LIDAR technology in its self-driving cars - although it's not clear whether the company was referring to only its single-LIDAR Volvo or to both the Volvo and its earlier seven-LIDAR Ford. The Velodyne lidar "doesn't make the decision to put on the brakes or get out of her way", said the President of the company Marta Thoma Hall. Uber stopped its testing operations in other regions.

Behind the scenes, Ducey's staff worked closely with Uber as he championed its regular service and its self-driving vehicles, allowing them to operate without permits and encouraging their testing and operation on public roads. This is the function of self-driving software. This incident shows that there is an urgent need for performance standards from public regulations.

The court also found no evidence to support the cab companies' contention that Uber acted with the intention of creating a monopoly. "But in the end, this technology is going to save tens of thousands of lives". This week, the governor of Arizona announced that he was effectively suspending Uber's testing of autonomous cars in the state, reports ABC. "As we develop self-driving technology, safety is our primary concern every step of the way". The amount of the settlement was not disclosed, but NPR spoke with a family attorney who declared that "the matter has been resolved". "We continue to assist investigators in any way we can".
