Facebook promises to redesign its privacy settings

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has apologized for the scandal and even purchased full-page ads in both American and British newspapers.

Facebook has been working on the changes in preparation for the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation, which were approved two years ago and take effect May 25.

Facebook said Wednesday it will now be easier for users to find privacy control settings and see the information the social media giant has about them - moves that come in the wake of the widening Cambridge Analytica data-misappropriation controversy.

Facebook has just announced a brand new settings menu on mobile devices. Instead of having settings spread across nearly 20 different screens as it did before they're now accessible from a single place.

An Indian billionaire who promised to help fund a rival to Facebook said Wednesday he had been "overwhelmed" with the response as the world grapples with concerns about data privacy.

The social network also today introduced a tool called "Access Your Information", which will let you review your posts, reactions, comments, and things you've searched for, then delete anything you no longer want on your profile or the platform. Facebook has placed ads in British, German and USA newspapers in recent days to apologize for the scandal. The Facebook data leak has also triggered an investigation by the Federal Trade Commission, which is now looking into the company's privacy practices.

The update follows the recent controversy brewing over an alleged data breach of almost 50 million Facebook users.

In a blog post titled "It's Time to Make Our Privacy Tools Easier to Find", the company "reminds" users how to do things like secure their account, control personal information, choose which ads are displayed, and manage who can view their posts and profile. But when she downloaded her archive earlier this week, she discovered that the videos hadn't been deleted; Facebook had apparently saved each of the unposted clips.

Facebook also said it will propose updates to its terms of service in the coming weeks and update its privacy policy, but gave no further details. "These updates are about transparency - not about gaining new rights to collect, use, or share data", Egan and Beringer said. The US house energy and commerce committee and US senate commerce committee have also asked Zuckerberg to appear at a hearing. Under Apps Other Use, you can choose to opt in or out of what data you share.

"This product enables third-party data providers to offer their targeting directly on Facebook", product marketing director Graham Mudd said in a statement posted online.
