School District Arms Students With Rocks

Helsel said some students even helped to put the stones in the buckets, which are stored in the classrooms. The superintendent of Blue Mountain School District, David Helsel, in Schuylkill County spoke at a state House Education Committee hearing on school safety this week.

An unidentified Blue Mountain School District senior indicated that he likes the plan, saying, "It matters because it will help protect the schools, anything helps, rocks are better than books and pencils".

A school in Pennsylvania is in the midst of a controversy involving rocks following the horrific Parkland, Florida, school shooting.

"If an armed intruder attempts to gain entrance to any of our classrooms, they will face a classroom full of students armed with rocks", he said.

In a video posted online, the superintendent said the district made a decision to bring rocks to the classrooms after staff members took the active shooter response training, ALICE - alert, lockdown, inform, counter and evacuate.

"At this point, we have to get creative, we have to protect our kids first and foremost, throwing rocks, it's an option", said Dori Bornstein.

According to the school official, staff and students go through routine drills.

And, if it comes to it, now they also have the rocks.

Though Helsel says his district doesn't have any plans to arm teachers right now, there is one employee trained as a security guard and the district plans to train more employees.

A local college student said, "I think that's rather comical".

Law&Crime reached out to the Blue Mountain School District for comment but no response was forthcoming at the time of publication.

Some students and parents interviewed by the outlet were supportive of the idea. The district has no plans to arm teachers, but each school will train and certify a maintenance worker to carry a gun.

If students at the rural school district can't evacuate during a shooting, they don't have to sit and wait.

That means that those who want to see the state taking a more proactive approach could help by proposing gun-related legislation on the state level.
