Hollywood Denounces Donald Trump Order Banning Most Transgender Troops

President Trump followed through late Friday and issued orders to ban transgender troops in all but extremely limited cases.

Back in July, Trump criticized the late Obama-era policy on transgender troops, saying in a series of tweets that the United States military would not foot bills for their sex reassignment surgeries.

In June 2016, the Obama administration lifted the longstanding ban on transgender individuals in the military, allowing them to serve openly for the first time.

After the President's directive was released, Mattis in August said that transgender troops will continue to serve in the USA military, pending the results of a study from experts Mattis will select who will provide advice on Trump's recent memorandum.

"Donald Trump and Mike Pence are literally wreaking havoc on the lives of our military families", said Ashley Broadway-Mack, president of the American Military Partner Association.

At least one openly transgender recruit has already signed a contract to join the USA military since a federal court ruled late a year ago that the military would have to accept transgender individuals.

In August, Trump declared March 23 would be the day his ban would be fully implemented.

Mattis gave his private recommendation for the policy to Trump in late February, but it hasn't been revealed.

Earlier Friday, Major David Eastburn, a Pentagon spokesman, said the announcement of a new policy would have no immediate practical effect on the military because the Pentagon is obliged to continue to recruit and retain transgender people in accordance with current law. In a strongly-worded statement, US House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi said the policy would harm the nation.

When Trump originally announced the ban on Twitter, he claimed that the military "cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption" of trans service members, despite the fact that studies have found that the ban would have negative impacts on the military.

"This policy is a thinly-veiled and feeble attempt by the Trump-Pence administration to justify the unnecessary discrimination of qualified patriots in order to advance their own personal agendas and in defiance of the administration's top military leadership", said Matt Thorn, president of OutServe-SLDN.

While LGBTQ advocacy groups and activists have pushed back against the new policy for its discriminatory and demeaning nature, others have criticized the policy too. There is no evidence to support a policy that bars from military service patriotic Americans who are medically fit and able to deploy.

"This decision is an insult to our courageous transgender service members and all who wear our nation's uniform", DNC Chair Tom Perez said.

The Palm Center, a group that promotes the study of LGBT people in the military, accused the Pentagon of having "distorted the science on transgender health to prop up irrational and legally untenable discrimination that will erode military readiness".

"The Department of Justice will continue to defend the Department of Defense's lawful authority to create and implement personnel policies they have determined are necessary to best defend our nation".
