Man wanted for questioning in officer's death arrested

Officer Hamilton was a 12-year veteran of the Pikeville Police Department.

Hall is sought for questioning in connection to Hamilton's shooting death late Tuesday night.

The KSP statement Thursday says police obtained an arrest warrant charging Hall with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and they also want to question him about the killing of Pikeville Police Officer Scotty Hamilton.

However, they later said the suspected shooter has not been captured. After speaking to the people in the vehicle, the officers decided to make a quick search around the area and a nearby residence to check for any questionable subjects on foot. The trooper later found the officer with a fatal gunshot wound.

Kentucky State Police initially reported one person was in custody. Along with the detectives with KSP Post 9, Detective Randy Combs with KSP's Critical Incident Response Team is leading the investigation.

According to investigators, Hamilton was assisting a state trooper in an investigation when he was shot after the two became separated. His wife is Chelsi Lawson Hamilton and they have a daughter. Pikeville's Mayor Jimmy Carter has asked people to pray for Hamilton's family.

A funeral service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday at the Expo Center.
