IndiGo Forced To Cancel 47 Domestic Flights As DGCA Grounds A320Neo Aircrafts

After an immediate order of Directorate General of Civil of Aviation (DGCA) to ground eleven A320Neo planes with faulty Pratt&Whitneyengines, which includes eight IndiGo and three GoAir planes, low-priced airline IndiGo has cancelled as many as 47 flights on Tuesday. To be sure, only a handful of A-320 Neos in IndiGo and GoAir fleets have this specific series of PW engine. The tipping point came when an Ahmedabad-Lucknow flight failed mid-air on Monday and made an emergency landing in Gujarat.

The Airbus A320 Neo plane had 186 passengers on board.

The DGCA says that A320neos with engine serial numbers ESN 450 and beyond will be grounded.

"Hundreds of passengers were stranded after a number of flights were cancelled by both IndiGo and GoAir in the wake of some aircraft going out of operations due to the DGCA order", a source said.

DGCA said it would remain in touch with the stakeholders including the European Aviation Safety Agency.

Three other IndiGo A320Neo planes have been on the ground since February following similar engine failures. The civil aviation regulator had asked the US-based manufacturer Pratt & Whitney for a commitment regarding safety concern but did not receive an affirmative response. It and GoAir said they'd complied with the DGCA directive.

Pratt & Whitney said in an emailed statement that it's working closely with customers to minimise disruption and has already begun to deliver engines with the "upgraded configuration". "The flight crew chose to return back to Delhi", GoAir said in a statement. The US company added that the "aircraft on ground situation" may take until the end of the second quarter to address.

The DGCA's significant decision also comes on a day when Suresh Prabhu took over the additional charge of Civil Aviation Ministry following the resignation of NDA ally TDP's leader Ashok Gajapathi Raju from the post last week.
