Paul Manafort gets a trial date

If convicted of bank fraud in Virginia, Manafort faces up to 270 years in prison, but prosecutors say federal sentencing guidelines call for much less time: four to five years.

U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis, based in Alexandria, Virginia has set a tentative trial date for July 10.

At a court appearance in Washington, D.C. on February 28, Judge Amy Berman Jackson chastised President Trump's former campaign chairman, saying, "I want to reiterate, Mr. Manafort, that the order that I issued, over no one's objection, does not just apply to Mr".

The charges in both cases relate to Manafort laundering some $75 million in relation to his work for Russia-backed former Ukraine president Viktor Yanukovych between about 2006 and 2014.

In the editorial, former Manafort employer and Russian steel magnate Oleg Deripaska claims the alleged collusion between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin is a manufactured non-scandal.

But Manafort, a veteran Washington Republican political consultant, has refused to do a deal and will go to trial instead. The other, which will begin on September 17 in Washington, D.C., is for additional charges, including money laundering and failure to register as a foreign agent.

Separately Thursday, an April 4 hearing was scheduled before a federal judge in Washington in Manafort's civil lawsuit challenging Mueller's appointment as special counsel, which the government has moved to dismiss.

If he's found guilty on the charges in the Washington case, Manafort could be sentenced to almost 20 years in prison.

The bearded man stood outside a Virginia courthouse to slam Manafort, who is accused of hiding tens of millions of dollars he earned through consulting work in the Ukraine from the Internal Revenue Service.

Prosecutors told said in court they planned to call 20-25 witnesses and said their arguments could last up to two weeks.

None of the charges brought against Manafort specifically involve Russian meddling in the 2016 election.

Manafort filed the complaint on January 3 alleging Mueller's Russian Federation probe is overly broad. A judge placed him on house arrest after he pleaded not guilty to those charges. He requested the Justice Department rescind Mueller's appointment.
