Roger Bannister, runner who broke the 4-minute mile, dies aged 88

The first man recorded to run a mile in less than four minutes, British athlete Roger Bannister, has passed away at the age of 88.

"RIP Sir Roger Bannister, who ran humanity's first sub-four minute mile and went on to be a distinguished neurologist and master of Pembroke", admirer Pádraig Belton wrote.

The record breaker was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2011. But, shortly before 6 p.m., the wind died down.

According to a statement from his family, he died peacefully on Saturday in Oxford, England.

Sir Roger Bannister ran a mile in under four minutes back in 1954Who holds the record for the fastest mile? It was as much of a psychological barrier as it was a physical barrier.

At the world indoor championships, the news cast a shadow over the final day of events on Sunday with the sell-out crowd in Arena Birmingham breaking into long applause after a special tribute to Bannister was screened.

"His achievement transcended sport, let alone athletics".

"We have all lost a giant and, for many of us, a deep and close friendship". "I wanted to be a great British miler following in his footsteps".

I'm so sorry to hear the sad news about Roger Bannister.

"It will go on being broken until it gets down to 3:30", Bannister said in an interview with the Independent newspaper in 2004.

He attended schools in London and Bath, proving himself a skilled student and runner and earning a scholarship to Oxford University, where he studied medicine while continuing to shine in mile and 1,500-meter track competitions.

"But beyond that, he was part of that pioneering spirit which seemed to exist in the 1950s - with a new Queen on the throne, Everest being conquered, the new TV age and the idea that you could do anything you put your mind to in barrier-breaking".

"He inspired a generation of runners and he will leave a lasting legacy on athletics". His assault on the four-minute barrier was meticulously planned and beautifully executed.

The official account of Team GB posted: "We are incredibly saddened by the death of Sir Roger Bannister, aged 88".

IAAF President Sebastian Coe said Bannister's death represented a "day of intense sadness both for our nation and for all of us in athletics". "Rest in Peace Roger".

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Louise Richardson added: "Roger Bannister epitomised what it means to be a living legend".
